چکیده
The timing of grace notes in skilled musical performance at different tempi: a preliminary case study. (2001) The timing of grace notes in skilled musical performance at different tempi: a preliminary case study. Abstract An empirical study is reported which investigates the relationship between musical structure and the timing of 11 grace notes in 45 performances by the same performer of a short Beethoven piano piece at a range of tempi. These performances were recorded and analyzed so as to extract timing measurements, and the pianist was interviewed to gain insights into his conscious performing strategies. Significant differences in the relative length of different grace notes were found: the two grace notes with a large descending pitch interval were played significantly longer than the others. Additionally, the grace notes were timed such that they did not 'take time' from the note they are nominally attached to, but from the preceding time interval. Close attention to interview data provided by the pianist reveals that the relative timing of the grace notes corresponds to his claims that he was mimicking the motor constraints of vocalists and string players. Lastly, the data provided additional evidence against the notion that changes in overall tempo always leave the relative proportion of adjacent events invariant. Grace notes with a longer mean duration tended to deviate significantly from proportional duration, whilst shorter grace notes were roughly invariant over tempo.

Relational invariance of expressive microstructure across global tempo changes in music performance: an exploratory study.
This study addressed the question of whether the expressive microstructure of a music performance remains relationally invariant across moderate (musically acceptable) changes in tempo. Two pianists played Schumann's "Träumerei" three times at each of three tempi on a digital piano, and the performance data were recorded in MIDI format. In a perceptual test, musically trained listeners attempte...
متن کاملMovement, planning, and music: Motion coordinates of skilled performance
Skilled musicians are capable of fast, fluent performance of complex musical sequences whose motor demands can shape sequential aspects of performance, similar to principles of coarticulation in speech. We address how performers’ motor systems can influence the ways in which melodies are performed, both in motion and sound. In contrast to energy conservation models that favor small movements at...

The purpose of the present study was to identify the effect of 18 movement frequency (tempo) on individuated finger movements in piano playing. Joint motion at 19 the digits was recorded while five expert pianists were playing thirty excerpts from musical pieces 20 with ...
متن کاملFrom Time to Time: The Representation of Timing and Tempo
Timing plays an important role in the performance and appreciation of almost all types of music. It has been studied extensively in music perception and music performance research (see Palmer 1997 for a review). The most important outcome of this research is that a large part of the timing patterns found in music performance—commonly referred to as expressive timing—can be explained in terms of...
متن کاملEffects of Tempo on the Timing of Simple Musical Rhythms
We investigated whether and how the timing of musical rhythms changes with tempo. Twelve skilled pianists played a monophonic 8-bar melody in 21 different rhythmic versions at 4 different tempi. Within bars, the rhythms represented two isochronous patterns and all possible ordered pairs and triplets of different note values with ratios from the set {3, 2, 1}. The 3-note rhythms also occurred in...
